Mass Timber Co. · Competitor Website audit

Nobody else is selling the structure

Every builder website in the area, read the way an owner or architect would read it, with the features Mass Timber Co. should borrow, beat, or skip.

Prepared for Fletcher White by Hawkes Design · September 23, 2026

0 of 15

competitor sites explain how the structure of a house is designed, made, or assembled. They sell craftsmanship and finished photos.

1

site uses our language: Couloir lists engineered timber-framed custom homes and early involvement. Worth watching.

4

sites do the content work that wins search and trust: Swager, Kuhn & Young, Dembergh, Wilkinson Montesano.

12

builders on the list have no website on record and were not reviewed.

What your competitors are doing

The field is photo-led and interchangeable
Mass timber is uncontested

  • Almost every homepage is a mountain photo, a craftsmanship claim, and a portfolio grid. Swap the logos and most could be the same firm.
  • The strongest sites earn trust with specifics: Swager publishes 2026 cost per square foot and permit math; Kuhn & Young answers ten real questions and lists every project by date, town, and community.
  • Second-home owners building from far away are the real audience. Three sites feature testimonials from owners who built from out of state.
  • Press and awards carry the luxury builders (Dembergh, Wilkinson, Teton Heritage). We have none yet, so we need a substitute proof.
  • Several sites load blank or half-blank until scripts fire (Kuhn & Young, Teton Heritage, Bontecou). Ours renders complete.
Positioning map: Mass Timber Co. sits alone in the top right, high on explaining the build and on engineered timber relevance
Positioning · horizontal: how much the site explains how the house gets built; vertical: engineered or prefab relevance. My read, not a measured score.

Project records that carry timber data

What they do

Kuhn & Young lists each project as a row with date, town, and community. Bontecou adds square footage and the architect. Nobody gives a single construction fact.

Our version

Every build on the Builds page gets a spec strip: CLT volume, panel count, crane days, weeks to a dry shell, plus architect and engineer credits. Architects read this. It proves the system with numbers no framer can show.

An honest cost and schedule guide

What they do

Swager publishes 2026 construction cost for a Jackson Hole custom home with a dollar per square foot figure, permit fee math, and a list of what clients underestimate, with a floating call button. It is the most useful page in the set, and it will rank.

Our version

A page on what mass timber changes in cost and schedule. Compare the structural package, time to a dry shell, and the finish work exposed timber replaces, as ranges, with the caveats stated. It answers the first question every owner asks.

A page for each market we build in

What they do

New West runs a location bar across the top with a page per office. Kuhn & Young and Swager name towns, subdivisions, and design review committees. Sustainable Builders lists every town in its heading.

Our version

Four location pages: Jackson Hole, Teton Valley, Sun Valley, Park City. Each names the local realities that shape a timber structure (snow load, access, design review, delivery route) and shows the nearest build. This is where local searches land.

A crane-day timelapse

What they do

Teton Heritage opens with Watch Our Video over a dusk exterior. Kuhn & Young and Dembergh embed a brand film. All of them show finished rooms, because a framed house going up is not much to watch.

Our version

A CLT house going up is the best footage in residential construction: walls and roof in days. A 30 to 60 second timelapse from the next install, with day markers, becomes the Process hero, the Instagram reel, and the opening of the Lookbook.

Built-from-afar updates for second-home owners

What they do

The testimonials that land hardest come from owners in Alabama, Texas, and New York who built from a distance. Swager promises weekly updates in a project portal. Bontecou has a Client Portal button in its footer.

Our version

A short section called Building From Afar: a weekly photo update, a named contact, and what the owner sees on crane day. Later, a private project page per client. Most of our buyers will not live here during the build.

A proof strip until the press arrives

What they do

Dembergh runs a strip of ten publication logos under the hero. Wilkinson has Our Recognition & Awards. Teton Heritage features a Mountain Living Home of the Year. For luxury buyers, this is the credential.

Our version

Start with the partners that make a timber home credible: the CLT mill, the structural engineers, the architects we build with. Pitch the South Fork cabins and the Wilson residence to Mountain Living, Homestead, and Big Sky Journal now, and swap in press logos as they come.

A detail gallery organized by element

What they do

Dembergh’s best section splits the portfolio into Wine Cellars, Carpentry, Kitchens, Bathrooms, so a buyer browses by what they care about instead of by house.

Our version

Browse by timber element: ceilings, volumes, connections, assembly. It shows the material doing the architecture, which is our whole argument, and it reuses images we already have.

Testimonials from architects and builders

What they do

Couloir’s quotes include a real estate agent and a guide-service owner alongside homeowners, each with a town. Dembergh quotes a partner calling them the gold standard for builders.

Our version

Half our buyers are architects and general contractors choosing a structural partner. One quote from one of them, with role and town, does more than any owner quote. Put one on Home and one on Process.

Carbon stored, stated per project

What they do

Sustainable Builders lists twenty green checkboxes with no numbers. Dembergh gives sustainability one paragraph. No one quantifies anything.

Our version

One figure on each project record: the carbon held in its structure, calculated from the timber volume. Roughly half the dry mass of wood is carbon, so the math is simple and defensible.

A sticky call and start bar on phones

What they do

Swager keeps Call and Start Your Project floating as you read. Most others bury the phone number in the footer.

Our version

On phones only, a two-button bar: Call Fletcher and Start a Project. It appears after the hero and hides near the footer. One global style, no plugin.

11 · When bios land

Put the people on the page

What they do

CurCo’s homepage is a crew photo on a ridge. Wilkinson shows the team on site milling timber, next to a community section and an awards row.

Our version

The About page already has a spot for bios. Add one crew photo from a crane day and one of Fletcher on site. It also answers who is actually running my job for the remote owners in item 05.

A longer FAQ, marked up for search

What they do

Kuhn & Young answers ten questions on the homepage: timelines, licensing in both states, working with out-of-state owners, how to start. Wilkinson and Swager do the same on inner pages.

Our version

Grow the Why Mass Timber FAQ from four to ten: cost, schedule, fire, moisture during construction, who engineers it, licensing in Idaho and Wyoming, working with my architect, what happens on crane day. Add FAQ schema in the SEO pass.

Patterns that hurt competitors.

Pages that load blank

Kuhn & Young, Teton Heritage, and Bontecou hide content until scroll scripts fire; a slow phone or a link preview sees white space. Keep every section visible at rest.

Carousels for the best work

Wind River and Shaw put featured projects in sliders; most visitors never see slide two. Show two or three builds outright.

Grayscale photography

Kuhn & Young drains color from every photo until hover. Timber is a color. Show it true.

World-class copy

Shaw repeats world-class across its hero slides and headings. Our voice rule already bans it: specific nouns, no hype.

One-screen sites

Two Ocean and Teton Timberframe are little more than a single screen. There is nothing for search or an architect to read.

Borrowing our line

Couloir already says early involvement. Bring Us In Early needs the proof behind it (items 01 and 02) so it reads as ours.

Suggested order

How we would sequence it.

This week

Sticky phone bar (10), FAQ to ten questions (12), spec strips on the two current builds with real numbers (01).

Before launch

Cost and schedule guide (02) and the four location pages (03). Together they are the search and trust foundation.

Next install

Shoot the crane-day timelapse (04) and collect one architect quote on site (08).

Next 60 days

Building From Afar section (05), partner strip and press pitches (06), detail gallery (07), team photos (11).

Later

Carbon figure on every project (09) once timber volumes are on file.

Needed from Mass Timber Co.: project numbers for the spec strips and cost ranges, partner names, one architect quote, and the date of the next install.
